Overview

PETAL encourages UM faculty to explore their teaching and student learning goals by offering a series of workshops that attend to specific topics as they are relevant. Workshops provide opportunities for faculty to learn new practices, create networks of cross-departmental colleagues, engage in conversations, and reflect on innovative methods for teaching and learning.

Rethinking Assessments: A 'No-Exam' Approach in Large Undergraduate Courses

How often have you been asked: “Professor, will this be on the exam?” Are your exams truly measuring student learning?  Do you want your assessments to be fair and equitable for all students?

Join us to learn from two award-winning faculty members from the University of Illinois who experimented with eliminating timed exams in STEM courses. The result? New strategies for assessment fostered both learning in their classes and a lifelong love of their subject matter.  A mixture of theory and practical application, this presentation will explore the historical context of different course assessment methods and make a compelling argument to rethink proctored timed exams as the default assessment in higher education. The speakers will underscore the perils of proctored exams on various student demographic groups and demonstrate how (and why) exams fail to accurately measure student knowledge.

Chemist Jeff Moore will share his course design, and Toni Gist, a clinical Assistant Professor of Food Science and Human Nutrition, will discuss her systematic approach to mastery learning. Collectively, they will facilitate a conversation on how educators can design courses and assessments to provide a more equitable, inclusive, and supportive educational environment in which all students can thrive.

Dr. Jeff Moore is the Stanley O. Ikenberry Research Professor of Chemistry, Stanley O. Ikenberry Endowed Chair Emeritus, and Professor Emeritus of Chemistry. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and a fellow of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the American Chemical Society (ACS). Jeff has received the Campus Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching and has been recognized as a “Faculty Ranked as Excellent by Their Students.”

Toni Gist is a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana/Champaign, teaching classes on nutrition and exercise's effects on the body. She has been recognized locally and nationally for instructional design and teaching excellence. In 2023, she received the UIUC Office of the Provost Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching award.

The AI Teaching Exchange

ai

The AI Teaching Exchange is a casual forum series for faculty of all experience levels and across departments to connect and exchange innovative ideas on how to leverage AI tools to enhance teaching and learning here at the U. It is a dedicated time and place for a small group of faculty members to gather, discuss, and reflect on what AI can really look like in our classrooms by brainstorming possibilities and forging channels of support. Each meeting will kick-off with a brief presentation by instructional designers and faculty experts on best practices and helpful resources using AI as a vehicle for innovative teaching practices, including University-supported AI platforms such as Adobe Firefly and Microsoft Copilot. The unstructured time that follows will allow faculty members to experiment with the AI tools and engage in casual conversation where they can build meaningful relationships over light refreshments and snacks.

Those new to AI are encouraged to check out the Teaching with AI Course available at no cost to UM faculty and staff.
